There has been more and more scrutiny on the job performance of NHL officials this season, and with good reason. It seems as though nearly every night either a major penalty call is missed, an egregious penalty is called on an undeserving player, and more.
Last night, officials reached an embarrassing new low when they not only missed a ridiculous high stick on Detroit Red Wings forward Andrew Copp that resulted in a broken cheekbone, but couldn’t be bothered to review the play as Copp lay injured on the ice while being tended to by a team trainer.
“In hindsight now because he has a broken cheekbone, it stings even more," Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said. "They (referees) didn't see it. What can you do? They never looked at it, they didn't see it. There's no blood. It's my understanding if an injury is caused for the whistle they can take a look at it, obviously it was a blatant high stick.”
