NHL releases a statement on Brendan Leipsic and his leaked text messages

An update to yesterday's story in which Washington Capitals forward Brendan Leipsic found himself at the center of a broiling controversy after some of his group text messages were leaked online via a friend’s Instagram story.

Leipsic, who formerly played for the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs, and some of his friends make some awful statements about women and single out former Canucks teammate Tanner Pearson’s wife calling her fat and “actually disgusting.”

Here’s the thing though… it gets worse. One of Leipsic’s friends goes on to tel the story of hooking up with a “fat native pig”. Yikes.

Leipsic has deleted his Instagram account and has effectively gone dark on all social media. The Capitals meanwhile released a brief statement saying:

This prompted the NHL to release a statement themselves and, if you read between the words, it seems like some punishment might be coming Leipsic's way.

I’m not gonna lie… these messages are pretty awful. If that’s your sort of thing, feel free to browse through the screenshots below. But first just consider that Leipsic likely never intended for this conversation to go public. This is a private conversation between friends who may or may not ever say these outside of private conversation. Having said that… what an idiot…
