The nominees for the Calder Trophy are in and frankly there's very few surprises to be had here.

The three nominees are Chicago Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin, Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid, and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

Perhaps the most surprising entrant on the list is Oilers forward Connor McDavid, who only appeared in a total of 45 games for the Oilers as a result of a significant injury suffered early in the season. Despite that McDavid ranked fourth among rookies in scoring, and was first when it comes to average points per game with 1.07.

The other forward on this list, Artemi Panarin, appeared in 80 games for the Blackhawks this season, and recorded a whopping 77 points, 30 goals and 47 assists. Panarin was the rookie leader for goals, assists and points in a very impressive debut season.

Last but not least, the only defenseman on the list is Philadelphia Flyers Shayne Gostisbehere who's rookie performance helped turn around the Flyer's season. Despite not playing in the NHL to start the season, when Gostisbehere did get his opportunity he made it count, and appeared in 64 games for Philadelphia. Much like Panarin, Gostisbehere led rookie defenseman in scoring with 17 goals, assists with 29 helpers and points with a total of 46.

To be perfectly honest this is an extremely tough call to make, and there will be disagreement no matter which one of these three men receives the award.
