NHL reveals three finalists for the Masterton Trophy.

The National Hockey League has unveiled the three finalists for the Masterton Trophy this season, and surprisingly a former NHL player has found his way on to the list.

The first of the three finalists will come as little surprise, Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr continues to play at an extremely high level despite his advanced age for a modern day NHL player, and is the perfect example of a Masterton trophy candidate.

Next, and another terrific selection, is New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello, who suffered a horrific injury late last season when he was struck in the head by a puck, suffering a brain contusion in the process. Zuccarello would not only come back from the injury, but had arguably the best season of his professional career.

Last but not least, is a retired NHL player, and off the top of my head I can't remember an NHL awarded being given to a player who retired prior to the ballots being cast. Pittsburgh Penguin Pascal Dupuis, who's season and career was cut short due to medical complications stemming from blood clots, continues to travel with and support his teammates despite how hard of a situation this must be for him.

The Masteton is awarded each year to the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey," and any of these three men would make a worthy winner.
