No joke, I hope he and his family will be safe.

This is being courageous. Calgary Flames defenseman Nikita Zadorov make quite the statement on Thursday during an interview with Russian YouTuber Yury Dud when he openly opposed to the invasion of Russia into Ukraine and the war still taking place.

The blue liner explained how he and fellow Russian NHLers, including Florida Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, tried to come together and make a statement against the war after their country invaded Ukraine in early 2022, but could not come to an agreement. Zadorov said the group ended up splitting into two:

“We divided into two camps,” he said. “Propaganda camp and sane camp.”

The comments made by Zadorov are surely courageous seeing that Russian YouTuber Yury Dud has over 10 million subscribers and the statement could make it to top Russian officials back home.

When the segment was posted, several fans grew concerned on Zadorov and his family’s safety. He is aware that pressure in Russia has stopped players from speaking out and acknowledges he is able to oppose to it because of the privilege of living and playing in North America. He is heading into his third season with the Flames.

“I’m sure there are guys in CSKA who don’t support the war,” he says, referring to the team. “They would never say this. … Unfortunately, people have to give up on their morals to feed their families.”

Zadorov posted for a “NO WAR” post of his own on his personal Instagram account last year, which remains the first post fans can see when going on his page.
