NHL slaps Islanders F Matt Barzal with fine after incident with Mitch Marner

He's a bit lighter in the wallet today.

The New York Islanders were dealt two bits of bad news thanks to their loss on Sunday night to the Toronto Maple Leafs. First, their setback officially confirmed their reservation on the outside looking in of this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Of course, this will sting all the more for Islanders fans, considering they were literally just one goal short of sending Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final last year against the Tampa Bay Lightning to sudden death overtime.

Additionally, forward Matt Barzal is now a bit lighter in the wallet after an incident on the bench involving Leafs forward Mitch Marner. He grabbed the jersey of Marner as he skated by during the 3rd period, and he's found out his punishment. The NHL Department of Player Safety has fined him $2,500 for "unsportsmanlike conduct":

However, Marner didn't seem too fazed by the incident afterwards.

"A pretty funny moment," Marner said. "He’s a good friend of mine and he’s a competitor out there. It’s fun to watch, fun to play against him."

Despite that, Marner did leave with this wish:

"Hopefully he gets fined for that, that would be great."

Wish granted.
