NHL team trades the top college prospect after he refuses to sign with them.

This was likely a tough pill to swallow for both teams.

For the Nashville Predators trading away the best player in college hockey must have felt absolutely terrible, but it was clear that Hobey Baker Award winner Jimmy Vesey just simply did not intend to sign a contract with their organization.

For the Buffalo Sabres, they give up a third round draft pick and in exchange may get nothing. While they have acquired the exclusive negotiating rights to Vesey, there's no guarantee that he will sign with their organization. Although as ESPN's Craig Custance points out, Vesey and Sabres star Jack Eichel share the same agent and the Sabres may be entering this with the belief that the deal will in fact get done.

Vesey is believed to be good enough to take on a top six role immediately upon signing with a National Hockey League team, so a third round pick is not a big ask if he does sign with Buffalo, but a massive price to pay if he doesn't.

Despite the quality of player that Vesey is, the big news of the day remains Toronto trading one of their first round picks in a huge trade. There was also a minor trade between theCoyotes and Stanley Cup Finalist Sharks earlier in the day.
