Retirement for Marc-Andre Fleury? Not so fast according to multiple NHL teams.
Marc-Andre Fleury may have fully intended to retire at the end of the 2024-25 National Hockey League season, but it seems that teams around the league may have different plans.
Fleury is set to participate in what will be his final NHL appearance later tonight when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in preseason action, with Fleury having signed a professional tryout offer with the Penguins to enable him to play 20 minutes with his former team. While Fleury may expect this to be his final send off, it sounds like there are teams around the league who want to make sure that isn't the case.
On Saturday, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun revealed that his sources have informed him that teams will try to lure Fleury out of retirement, with LeBrun specifically citing the turn of the new year as the time in which they will try to do so. LeBrun was so confident in his prediction in fact that he called it an absolute certainty.
From LeBrun:
So I will just say this: I believe teams will try to convince Fleury out of retirement in January. I don’t know what he will say, but I am telling you teams will call, 100 percent.
Fleury isn't coming off the best of performances with his last two seasons seeing him record a goals against average of just under 3.00 (2.98 and 2.93 respectively) and a save percentage under .900 (.895 and .899 respectively). In spite of this it seems that teams around the league would still welcome his veteran leadership and overall positive attitude in a backup role.
What teams do you think could attempt to lure Fleury back to the NHL and what do you think his response will be? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.
