The best news hockey fans have got in years!
Fans who have been starved for best on best international hockey for years now may have just received the best news we've received in a very long time.
The news comes from a source that is beyond reproach with the comments coming directly from the National Hockey League's deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, after Daly was a recent guest on a podcast hosted by veteran NHL analyst Pierre McGuire. It was during that appearance that Daly would lay out several details about the NHL's plans for international hockey moving forward. Those details included the NHL's intentions of hosting a regular international tournament of their own, a tournament that will be played all around the globe instead of just in North America.
"We have a commitment to do a world cup of hockey every four years," revealed Daly last week. "We have a plan for the world cup of hockey 2028, and we hope to announce the cities that we will be playing games in it coming out of the Olympic break."
"There will be one city in North America and one city in Europe to play the preliminary rounds," revealed Daly. "We will have 8 different countries represented, 4 teams playing in Europe and 4 in North America, with the best 2 teams in each pool playing the finals in North America."
That is incredibly exciting news for fans of international best on best hockey. Should this come to pass as planned that would mean a best on best tournament every 2 years, with the Winter Olympic Games and the NHL's World Cup of Hockey alternating every 2 years. Given that this comes from the second most powerful man in the entire NHL, I expect we will be getting just that and I for one am extremely excited to see it.
The only question now is which cities will be the first to host the NHL's new and revamped World Cup of Hockey?
