According to multiple online reports, the NHLPA is set to hire sitting Presidential cabinet member and U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh as the union's next President, replacing longtime NHLPA President Donald Fehr.
Frank Seravalli reports that even though Walsh is a sitting member of the presidential cabinet, he will leave his post in the days after Tuesday's State of the Union address from President Joe Biden.
Walsh is a the former mayor of Boston has already addressed the 32-member NHLPA executive board via Zoom and is expected to be unanimously approved, again per Seravalli.
Walsh doesn't have a legal background, but he was a Laborers' Union president in Boston before entering politics. He was also a Boston Bruins season-ticket holder after growing up in Dorchester, a section of Boston. It should also be noted that he accepted campaign donations from Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs during his time in Boston municipal politics.
It's believed that Walsh edged out former Vancouver Canucks general manager and long-time NHL player agent Mike Gillis for the role as NHLPA head.
