The league’s ruling has fans and analysts talking and I bet Patrick Roy will have something to say about it.
Word have just come out on Wednesday morning that no supplemental discipline is expected for Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen following a dangerous hit on New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov. League officials noted that Romanov’s defensive partner, Scott Mayfield, had made contact with Rantanen just before the collision, a factor that influenced their decision. Per Elliotte Friedman:
Despite the ruling, the incident remains one of the most talked-about moments of the early season, and Patrick Roy, head coach of the Islanders, did not hold back in his reaction. On the bench, Roy was absolutely incandescent, screaming at Rantanen as he headed down the tunnel after Romanov was helped off the ice. “You’re not gonna f**ing finish this game!” Roy yelled, a rare glimpse of unfiltered intensity from the Hall of Fame coach.
After the game, Roy doubled down on his criticism, making clear his stance on respect and safety on the ice.
“When you see the number, you have to lay off. Everybody knows that,” he said, adding that Rantanen’s hit was, in his words, “disrespect."
The hit sparked an intense bench meltdown and ignited conversations across social media and the hockey world about player safety, accountability, and the fine line between aggressive play and dangerous contact.
While the league has decided no further punishment is warranted, Roy’s reaction underscores just how seriously he and the Islanders view the incident. For fans, the images of Roy screaming at Rantanen, coupled with the knowledge that Romanov was left on the ice , will linger.
And I’m sure we will hear from Roy again about the lack of punishment to Rantanen.
