Is Sidney Crosby about to get a new star forward to play with?
Over the course of the last several days the saga surrounding Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson has gotten spicier and spicier, and the latest installment from the National Hockey League's top insider might be the spiciest one yet.
By now most of you reading this will know that Robertson turned down a gigantic contract offer from the Seattle Kraken this past week, a contract offer that was reportedly somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 million per season on an 8 year deal, a decision that has now left the Stars in a difficult position if they do indeed intend to work out a trade.
While there's no telling where Robertson will end up when the dust has settled, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently linked Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"I heard that there were talks with Pittsburgh on Friday or Saturday," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
According to the insider, other teams around the league seem to believe that there is a real possibility Robertson ends up alongside Sidney Crosby next season.
"There were a couple of teams who thought there was some momentum there, but obviously it didn't happen," added Friedman.
While the news may come as a big surprise to most, Friedman it sounds like wasn't surprised at all. According to the insider there are rumblings that the Penguins are looking to make a significant move.
"Pittsburgh by the way is another team that people are saying is trying to do something with some heft to it," revealed Friedman. "So I wasn't so surprised to hear that."
Friedman stated clearly that he believes Robertson's first choice would be to remain in Dallas as a member of the Stars, but also highlighted a sizeable gap in negotiations between the two sides. According to the insider the Stars are sitting somewhere around $12 million per season on a new deal, while Robertson is seeking something upwards of $14 million per season.
Will that be enough to force a trade to Pittsburgh? Only time will tell.
