Bonino goes down.

Nick Bonino has been injured just a few days after being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On Saturday, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed that one of the Penguins' newest acquisitions would be out for an extended period of time. Sullivan revealed that Bonino had been complaining of pain after being struck by a puck against the New York Islanders on Thursday, resulting in the Penguins sending Bonino to the hospital for a health check up.

In what is a credit to Bonino's toughness, doctors would quickly discover that the puck striking him had actually lacerated his kidney, something that required surgery to repair. According to Sullivan, Bonino has already undergone the surgical procedure to repair the damage, which is good news, but unfortunately that means that he will now be out week to week as a result of his injury and the subsequent surgery.

While losing Bonino fresh off of a trade is going to be a frustrating situation for the Penguins, the main concern here is of course his health.

Bonuno is scheduled to be released from hospital today, and I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.
