When Nick Robertson was traded from Toronto to Pittsburgh at the start of July, questions immediately swirled about what his future contract situation would look like. The 24-year-old winger was heading toward a salary arbitration hearing later this month, but that process is now off the table after the two sides came to terms on a new agreement.

From Toronto to Pittsburgh, and Now Locked In

Robertson and the Penguins have agreed to a two-year contract carrying an average annual value of $3.25 million, as first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. The deal is worth $6.5 million in total and will keep Robertson under contract through the 2027-28 season, at which point he will once again be a restricted free agent.

The hearing that was originally scheduled for July 28 is no longer necessary. Robertson was acquired by Pittsburgh on July 1 in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft. His arrival gives the Penguins a young, productive forward who has steadily built his resume at the NHL level over the past several seasons.

What Robertson Brings to Pittsburgh

During the 2025-26 campaign with the Maple Leafs, Robertson posted 16 goals and 16 assists across 78 games, totaling 32 points. Over the course of his career, all spent in Toronto prior to the trade, he has accumulated 48 goals and 40 assists in 234 regular-season NHL contests. Originally selected by the Maple Leafs with the 53rd overall pick in the 2019 draft, Robertson has shown the ability to contribute offensively while still being relatively early in his development arc.

With the contract now settled, Robertson can focus entirely on preparing for his first full season in a Penguins uniform. Pittsburgh will be hoping that a change of scenery helps the young winger take another step forward in his game as the franchise continues to reshape its roster.
