NIcklas Backstrom out after getting his bell rung by Anders Lee

This just in, Washington Capitals head coach Todd Reirden has confirmed that center Nicklas Backstrom will NOT play in tomorrow's Game 2 against the New York Islanders due to concussion protocol.

Check it out:

In case you missed it yesterday, Backstrom was absolutely BLOWN UP by Isles captain Anders Lee early in the game. Backstrom did not return after suffering from this hit:

The Caps obviously took exception to the hit and pugilist Tom Wilson wasted no time in making Lee pay. The two dropped the gloves and... well Wilson beat the wheels off Lee pretty handily.

Check it out:

Suffice it to say, this is a series that could provide hockey fans with some old school, rough and tough, knock 'em down and drag 'em out style hockey. In other words: Playoff Hockey. Just what the doctor ordered.

It'll be interesting to see if Wilson and the rest of the Capitals try to exact any more revenge on Lee and the Isles tomorrow night or if they simply concentrate on playing their game. After all, the Caps seemed to be in cruise control with a 2-0 lead yesterday before four consecutive Islanders goals absolutely dumbfounded them. The Isles walked away with a tidy 4-2 victory and a 1-0 series lead. The Capitals certainly can't afford to fall back two games to none, whether they avenge Backstrom or not.
