The reigning MVP's bombshell request blindsides Tampa Bay on a Friday!
It seemed like one of the safest assumptions in the NHL. Nikita Kucherov, the franchise's all-time leading scorer and reigning league MVP, finishing his career in Tampa Bay. But on a stunning Friday , that assumption was shattered.
According to Elliotte Friedman, citing multiple sources, Kucherov has informed both his teammates and the Lightning organization that he will not re-sign with the club and has formally requested a trade.
The specific reasons behind the decision remain unclear. Kucherov is in the final year of an eight-year, $76-million deal, making him one of the most significant pending unrestricted free agents in the league. He doesn’t have a full no trade. It’s a modified no trade, 10-team list of approved destinations.
Just last week, Kucherov surpassed Steven Stamkos as the highest-scoring player in Lightning history. The timing of his trade demand, coming so soon after that milestone, only adds to the shock.
Both Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois and Kucherov's agent, Dan Milstein, declined to comment on the situation, though Pierre LeBrun reports that Milstein and BriseBois have met and that Kucherov informed his teammates of his decision on the plane. LeBrun does add that Kucherov plans to keep playing for the Lightning while this situation plays out.
For years, the expectation around the league was that Kucherov would remain a Lightning player for the long haul. That belief now appears to have been misplaced. According to Friedman, Kucherov has made it evident that he is unhappy and, at least for the time being, prefers to pursue a different path.
The trade deadline and July 1 free agency both loom as potential pivot points, and much could change between now and then.
