The hockey world has been in a frenzy since last Friday, when Nikita Kucherov, the reigning Hart Trophy winner and three-time NHL scoring champion, officially requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The shockwave has rippled through all 32 franchises, especially for the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Kucherov addressed the media Monday in Tampa to explain his decision. According to the star forward, the issue is not about money. It comes down to a lack of respect and communication from the organization's leadership. Kucherov reportedly said he had only two conversations with general manager Julien BriseBois over the past four months, and that BriseBois made it clear the winger was free to leave on July 1. The relationship appears to have reached a breaking point.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Kucherov has the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs among the teams at the top of his preferred destinations for a potential trade.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that Montreal has genuine interest in the superstar. The connection between head coach Martin St. Louis and Kucherov is impossible to overlook. The two know each other well, a bond that could prove pivotal in the Russian forward's thinking over the coming months.

LeBrun added that Montreal is a team on the rise, an emerging contender in a market that could appeal to Kucherov. "I believe they would enter the race if invited," the insider wrote. The ties between Kucherov and the Canadiens organization go even deeper. Observers have pointed to connections with figures like Vincent Lecavalier, agent Dan Milstein, and assistant coach Derek Lalonde, who previously worked alongside Kucherov in Tampa Bay.

However, LeBrun believes that for both Montreal and Toronto, this is more likely a July 1 scenario than a midseason deal. Tampa Bay is reportedly very reluctant to trade a player of this calibre within its own division.

The Canadiens are far from alone in this pursuit. According to LeBrun's sources around the league, at least 25 teams discussed Kucherov's situation internally over the weekend. "Some teams will lie to you, but 31 organizations want number 86," one anonymous general manager told him. LeBrun expects between 20 and 25 teams would be willing to offer a contract worth $20 million per season if Kucherov reaches unrestricted free agency this summer.

Among the other teams to watch are the Maple Leafs, who dream of pairing Kucherov with Auston Matthews. Utah Mammoth can lean on the presence of close friend Mikhail Sergachev and head coach André Tourigny, who coached Kucherov in junior hockey. The Los Angeles Kings have significant cap space for next summer. The Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, New York Islanders, Seattle Kraken, and Detroit Red Wings are also reportedly in the mix.

One crucial detail remains. Kucherov has not yet narrowed his list of preferred destinations. He and agent Dan Milstein plan to take their time over the coming months to evaluate all potential landing spots. On the contract front, the Kucherov camp reportedly expects a deal of at least six years at $20 million per season.

The central question is whether Tampa Bay will move Kucherov before the March 1 trade deadline or let him walk to free agency in July. Either way, the next few months promise to be among the most captivating stretches of player movement the NHL has seen in years.
