The Carolina Hurricanes were crowned the 2026 Stanley Cup Champions on Sunday night when they dispatched the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, but fans in Raleigh, North Carolina weren't the only ones celebrating.

Throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs a number of fans from the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada had thrown their support behind Hurricanes forward Nikolaj Ehlers. Ehlers was a former long time member of the Jets organization and with the Jets out the playoffs fans in Winnipeg were more than happy to root for Ehlers' continued success.

It seems that support was noticed by the man himself, because when he was asked about his fans in Winnipeg following his incredible Stanley Cup win on Sunday night, Ehlers had a reaction that no one could have anticipated. The 30 year old National Hockey League veteran broke down in tears as he spoke of his love for the City of Winnipeg, his former team, and the fans still cheering for him even now.

"I loved being in Winnipeg," said Ehlers through tears. "This was the dream there. I'm obviously sad I wasn't able to do that with the guys in Winnipeg and the City of Winnipeg. They hold a special place in my heart. They gave me a shot at playing in the NHL and I couldn't be more thankful. It was a hard decision this summer, but I loved my 10 years in Winnipeg and it was a special time."

You can see the very brief but emotionally charged interaction just below:

The man who asked Ehlers the question about his fans in Winnipeg admitted that he never anticipated such a raw and emotional response from the NHL veteran.

"I certainly wasn't expecting that reaction," admitted Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "Ehlers is a really confident lad, I've never seen that side of him before. Never. I'm sure others may have but I never have and I was actually blown away that he reacted like that."

I have no doubt that fans in Winnipeg will be very happy to learn that their continued support still means so much to a player who dedicated a decade of his life to their beloved hockey team.
