The 2023-24 season has going as Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had planned. While he was thinking to be working towards a fourth championship deep into summer, it looks like the superstar will get an early break if the Pens failed to once again reach the postseason. Some say it could give him some time to think about an extension since he can negotiate one as soon as the next NHL calendar gets underway on July 1, 2024.

However, Crosby might not need time to focus on negotiations since insider Frank Seravalli has reported that the Penguins have have already discussed a contract extension with the face of the franchise. Seravalli believes that he could sign the dotted line within minutes of July 1st, when he becomes eligible to do so.

This clearly sends the message to all fans, especially the Avalanche ones looking for Nathan MacKinnon to play with his close buddy in Colorado, to stop with all of the mock trades and crazy scenarios.

Recent reports have indicated that Crosby could accept a massive discount to give his team the best chance to succeed, like we’ve seen both Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci do in the past with the Boston Bruins.

The Penguins will want to keep Crosby, there is no doubt about that. They’ll also have enough salary cap space with eight players under contract for 2025-26 and a projected $42.5 million in cap space. Crosby will be dictating what his salary boundaries will be, but there’s a clear sense he could ask for way less in order to provide his team’s a thick wallet to get top line mates, hence another shot at the Stanley Cup.

Many insiders believe Crosby will want to stay and retire with the Penguins. No one is surprise that an offer is already in place and that Crosby will sign it as soon as he can to remain in Pittsburgh.

This may be the only good news this week for Penguins’ fans as trade talks loom on Pittsburgh moving forward Jake Guentzel prior to Friday’s deadline.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s action, the Penguins sit in sixth place of the Metropolitan division, eight points away from the last Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern conference, held at the moment by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
