A rumored trade between the Penguins and Oilers is falling apart.
Fans of the Edmonton Oilers have been desperately hoping that their team's front office will make a move to shore up the team's goaltending but, unfortunately for those fans, it seems the Oilers have hit nothing but roadblocks in that regard.
On Saturday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman shared his insight into the rumors of a potential trade between the aforementioned Oilers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, a trade that would involve Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry. According to the insider, this is a deal that has hit a significant roadblock.
"I do think there is legitimate Edmonton interest in Jarry," revealed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. "But I think it is extremely complicated and might not be possible."
Among those complications is a major one for the Edmonton Oilers. According to Friedman, if the Oilers wish to acquire Jarry from the Penguins they will have to find a way to absorb his entire cap hit.
"Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain," said Friedman. "The Penguins are not willing to retain."
I have no doubt that the immediate reaction to this will be to simply suggest trading away Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, but it doesn't sound like that is in the cards for the Oilers. Instead, Friedman believes the Oilers want a tandem of Jarry and Skinner, which would require them to find a way to fit both their cap hits simultaneously.
"One of the reasons I don't believe it's possible is because I don't think it's a Skinner for Jarry situation," revealed Friedman. "I believe the Oilers would like to do would be to pair Skinner with Jarry."
Fans in Edmonton hoping that Jarry would be their savior may have to start looking elsewhere for an answer to their prayers.
