Oilers CEO gets real about the biggest contract negotiation of the summer.
One of the biggest talking points this summer has been the fact that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid remains unsigned. McDavid was eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1st, but in spite of that no new deal has been announced.
While it might be an interesting, or even troublesome, topic of conversation for fans and pundits alike, it doesn't sound like anyone within the Oilers organization itself is at all worried about how this will play out. Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson has now publicly commented on the ongoing negotiations between the two sides, and quite frankly it doesn't seem like Jackson is even remotely concerned about how this will play out.
"There's a certain level of comfort with Connor," said Jackson on Monday. "He's been in Edmonton for 10 years, he's been very vocal about how much he loves the city, he loves playing for this team."
Jackson could not have seemed any less troubled by the fact that McDavid remains unsigned, and he admitted that part of that comes directly as a result of the team's success over the last 2 seasons.
"The team is a good team which is paramount to Connor having an opportunity to win," admitted Jackson. "I think the conversation would be a lot different if we were struggling and had not gone as far. As disappointing as it has been to not win, we've been right there for two years in a row."
Jackson also pointed to the dynamic that exists currently within the Oilers organization, one built on strong relationships between the team's star player and management.
"My relationship with Connor goes way back," said Jackson. "Connor has a lot of confidence in Stan [Bowman] and has been public about that and ownership, Daryl Katz and his family, have treated Connor and Lauren very well."
There may be one other factor at play here, one that Jackson openly admitted to during his recent interview. The Oilers CEO admitted that a player of McDavid's stature can basically call his own shot here.
"It's not going to be a long negotiation," admitted Jackson. "It will be unlike any other negotiation because it's not really."
That should help any concerned Oilers fans breathe a little easier for the rest of the summer, but if you're still not convinced you can hear it from Jackson's own mouth in the short video below.
