Oilers cut 5 more players despite promises to the contrary.

The Edmonton Oilers have trimmed their training camp roster with some significant names getting the bad news on Sunday. To make matters worse for the players in question, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch had indicated that the players were very likely to stick around for at least one more preseason game, but as it turns out that will not be the case.

Knoblauch had indicated following the team's win over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday that the Oilers would likely wait until after Monday's upcoming preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks to make more roster cuts, but unfortunately for 5 Oilers hopefuls the axe has now dropped a full day early.

In total the Oilers have cut 5 players, including forwards Seth Griffith, Sam O'Reilly and Matt Savoie as well as defensemen Cam Dineen and Connor Carrick.

Griffith was on a professional tryout offer but has not earned an NHL contract, being released from his PTO and will not be expected to report to the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors.

In the case of Dineen and Carrick the idea is likely the same, to have both men report to the AHL, however they will have to pass through waivers before the Oilers can officially send them down. Seeing a player picked up on waivers at this time of year is relatively unusual, with most teams cutting players from their rosters rather than adding, but it isn't impossible.

Matt Savoie has been assigned directly to the AHL where he will join the Condors in Bakersfield.

Last but not least Sam O'Reilly is heading back to the Ontario Hockey League where he will rejoin the London Knights.

Savoie and O'Reilly are two of the Oilers top prospects and there likely will be some who are disappointed that neither player made enough of an impression in training camp to earn a roster spot this season.
