Edmonton reportedly pushed hard to deal a core piece but this is where it fell apart:
The Edmonton Oilers may have come closer than anyone realized to making a franchise-altering move at the trade deadline.
According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, the Oilers actively shopped defenseman Darnell Nurse, even engaging in discussions with the Toronto Maple Leafs about a potential deal that would have sent the veteran blue liner out east.
“They offered him up to at least one team, that team said no,” Pagnotta revealed, adding that Edmonton also spoke with Toronto ahead of the deadline to try to make something happen.
The report paints a clear picture: the Oilers were exploring major changes. Nurse, who carries a $9.25 million cap hit, has long been a key piece of Edmonton’s core. But moving him, even with salary retained, would have created valuable flexibility for a team looking to reshape its roster.
Despite the effort, the Leafs ultimately passed. The hesitation suggests that even with Edmonton’s willingness to negotiate, concerns about Nurse’s contract and fit may have been too significant to overcome.
There were also other moving parts involved. Edmonton had interest in additional pieces, including Nicolas Roy, who eventually landed with the Colorado Avalanche, highlighting how complex the potential deal may have been. Instead, the Oilers pivoted, acquiring Jason Dickinson from the Chicago Blackhawks instead to bolster their depth at center.
The fact that Nurse’s name surfaced at all is telling. As one of the longest-tenured players on the roster, behind only Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, his availability signals that no move is off the table in Edmonton.
With the offseason approaching, the Oilers are now firmly a team to watch. If Nurse’s name comes up again, it won’t just be another trade rumor: it could mark a major shift in the direction of the franchise.
