The Edmonton Oilers beat the Dallas Stars 6-3 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on Thursday night to set up a second straight meeting with the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. An emotional scene took place moments after the Oilers were presented the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, which this time, they touched and brought along with them to the dressing room.

This did not please fans watching on the big screen in Edmonton, as videos caught the reaction in Rogers Arena of captain Connor McDavid skating over to the trophy and immediately touching it. In the video below, you can hear fans yelling, with some clearly asking “what the hell” when the trophy was touched.

After the win over the Dallas and going over to touch the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl for the picture, McDavid explained why he did it.

“It’s pretty obvious I think,” McDavid said about what was different from the end of last year’s Western final. “Don’t touch it last year, you don’t win. Touch it this year, hopefully we win.”

Most NHL teams avoid touching the conference championship trophy, with their goal instead to hoist the Stanley Cup.

And I guess that’s what fans in Edmonton expected the Oilers and McDavid to do.

Florida didn’t touch the Prince of Wales Trophy after wrapping up the East final with a Game 5 win at Carolina on Wednesday night. The Panthers are going to their third consecutive Cup Final.

Only one of the Oilers or Panthers will hoist the Stanley Cup, and so might as well have one team that touches the Conference trophy and the other that does not.
