The Edmonton Oilers have acquired veteran defenseman Connor Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick. Additionally, the Blackhawks are retaining 50% of Murphy's $4.4 million annual salary.
In order to get Murphy on the roster at $2.2 million annually, Oilers GM Stan Bowman was forced to do a bit of roster shuffling. Heading to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors is 21 year old forward Isaac Howard, while veteran forward Mattias Janmark is headed to long-term injury reserve. The 33 year old Janmark will reportedly have season ending surgery.
The 32 year old Murphy has four goals and 13 points in 60 games for the Blackhawks this season and is in the final year of a four year contract.
Look for Murphy to play alongside Mattias Ekholm on the Oilers' third pairing.
