A beautiful gesture.

In spite of the fact that, during my time covering the sport of hockey, I have witnessed thousands of good deeds done by both hockey players and members of the hockey community at large, the kindness of those in the hockey world never ceases to amaze me.

On Friday members of the hockey community were once again lucky enough to witness yet another example of that kindness when the Edmonton Oilers went above and beyond for a young man named Ben Stelter. Ben is a 5 year old boy that has suffered tremendously as a result of brain cancer, undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy and several rounds of radiation treatment only to have his brain cancer return once again in December of 2021.

Amazingly, in spite of all that he has been through, Ben was simply overjoyed when he was honored recently during a game for the Edmonton Oilers.

While that alone was a beautiful moment, the Oilers went well above and beyond what fans in attendance and those watching at home would have witnessed during the course of the game. The players all welcomed Ben back in the locker room following the game and once again he was simply bubbling with joy as he got to meet many of his favorite athletes in person.

Here's the moment that Ben walked into the Oilers locker room, his awestruck face is simply beautiful.

The Oilers didn't simply give him a tour of the locker room however, they also made him an honorary captain of the franchise for a day. Following that Ben was also given the game helmet as well as a brand new jacket that he can now wear proudly to remember this special moment.

My favorite part of the whole event though came during the post game press conference. The Oilers decided to bring their new captain along with them and again in spite of all that he has suffered the joy was simply oozing out of the young man the entire time as he answered questions from the media.
