Could Holland be eying a few Red Wings players to add to his current squad?
With the Edmonton Oilers hoping to go on an extended run in the post All-Star break that will hopefully see them solidify their playoff positioning, there has been talk on whether or not general manager Ken Holland will be looking to surround the elite dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatl with additional talent.
The Oilers were able to advance to the Western Conference Final last season before being unceremoniously swept by the eventual Cup winning Colorado Avalanche, and safe to say, they want a taste of that success again but with a happier ending.
With the NHL Trade Deadline approaching on March 3, the folks at the aggregate site of Oilers Nation have thrown together a few potential names that Holland could look to bring aboard from none other than his former team in the Motor City, the Detroit Red Wings.
Among the names listed as possibilities include forwards Pius Suter and Oskar Sundqvist, along with defenseman Olli Maatta. All three are in the final years of their contracts and could be flipped at the Deadline by current Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman as he continues his work of accumulating considerable draft stock.
Suter, who has largely underwhelmed this season after a positive 1st year in Detroit last season, has found himself in and out of the lineup while having only produced six goals with six assists. Meanwhile, Sundqvist has found himself used as mostly a utility-style forward, skating in the bottom 6 but also getting considerable power play time.
Perhaps the most intriguing option for Holland and the Oilers to consider would be Maatta, a solid defenseman who has posted better than expected numbers in Detroit so far this year and also has championship experience, having won a pair of Stanley Cup rings with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Holland and Yzerman have already done business with one another, having swung deals that sent Andreas Athanasiou and Mike Green from Detroit to Edmonton while seeing fan favorite Sam Gagner head to Detroit. Could more deals be in the works?
