A surprising veteran name has emerged as Edmonton searches for another top-six winger.
The Edmonton Oilers continue to search for help on the wing, but the latest name linked to the club has sparked an immediate backlash among the fan base.
According to longtime Edmonton writers Kurt Leavins and Jim Matheson, veteran winger Vladimir Tarasenko has emerged as a possible free-agent option for the Oilers. While the former Stanley Cup champion remains one of the biggest names left on the open market, not everyone believes he is the right fit for a team with championship expectations.
Leavins floated Tarasenko as a potential solution to Edmonton’s need for another top-six forward, pointing to his proven scoring ability and wealth of playoff experience. At 33 years old, Tarasenko still managed to produce 23 goals and 24 assists for 47 points in 75 games with the Minnesota Wild last season, adding another five points in 11 playoff appearances.
Matheson, however, was far less enthusiastic.
The veteran columnist questioned whether Tarasenko’s declining footspeed would allow him to keep pace with the Oilers’ high-tempo attack, particularly alongside stars Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. He also expressed skepticism that Tarasenko would be willing to sign the kind of bargain contract Edmonton would likely require, suggesting a deal in the neighborhood of $2 million per season may not be enough to entice the veteran winger.
Tarasenko is coming off a contract carrying a $4.75 million cap hit, making a significant pay cut a difficult proposition.
The rumor has already generated plenty of debate among Oilers fans online. Some believe Tarasenko’s finishing ability and championship pedigree would make him a worthwhile gamble at the right price. Others argue Edmonton should prioritize adding younger, faster players instead.
With the unrestricted free-agent market thinning out by the day, Edmonton’s options are becoming increasingly limited. Whether Tarasenko ultimately lands in Alberta remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: if he is indeed the Oilers’ next target, it is a move that has sharply divided the fan base and insider crew.
