Oilers linked to both the Red Wings and the Bruins in goalie trade rumor

Is Stan Bowman about to make a giant mistake?

It's looking more and more like it's Stuart Skinner or bust for the Edmonton Oilers again.

It's no secret that goaltending has been a sore spot for the Oilers in recent seasons, but GM Stan Bowman has failed to address the position in back to back offseasons and the team now looks poised to run things back again in 2025-26.

Barring any unforeseen moves, the Oilers will rock the duo of Skinner and Cam Pickard next season after having missed out on acquiring goalie John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks earlier this offseason. Gibson, of course, was traded to the Detroit Red Wings and interestingly enough there are now reports that the Oilers are sniffing around Detroit for a potential future option in goal.

NHL insider Cam Robinson reports that the Oilers have contacted the Red Wings to see about "long term options" in goal, specifically they've inquired about goalie prospects Trey Augustine and Sebastian Cossa.

From Robinson on the Sekeres and Price Show in Vancouver:

"They are looking a little more long term," Robinson said. "I was told they've contacted Detroit; I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine...that was a non starter; they have...Sebastian Cossa sitting there."

The 20 year old Augustine seems like a can't-miss prospect, so it's no surprise that the Red Wings aren't interested in moving him. He's Michigan born and bred and he's a back to back gold medal winner at the World Junior Championships. The kid is a stud and the Red Wings would be wise to hang on to him closely.

Cossa though is an interesting case.

He's 22 years old and has had two stellar seasons at the AHL level with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He looks ready to take the next step, but is blocked in Detroit by Gibson and Cam Talbot. I suspect he'll play the season out in the AHL and will be pushing for NHL time in the near future. At 6'6", 230 pounds he's an intriguing prospect and has done well to increase his mobility since being drafted in the 1st round, 15th overall back in 2021. Could he be what the Oilers are looking for?

If they're looking for a more veteran option, the Bruins are reportedly shopping goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.

Bruins insider Jimmy Murphy has reported for weeks now that the Bruins are taking offers on Czech forward Pavel Zacha, but just yesterday Murphy reported that the team is also taking offers on backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, as well.

"Trade rumors continue to surround the Boston Bruins, with Joonas Korpisalo and Pavel Zacha's names consistently coming up," Murphy reports.

Here's the thing...

OF COURSE they're trying to trade Korpisalo! His contract stinks!

He's in year three of a five year contract that pays him $4 million annually and he's playing on his fourth team in five years. Yikes...

If I'm honest, he sounds EXACTLY like the type of goalie that might appeal to Bowman. Is he about to make a giant mistake?
