Oilers make a goaltending change after just 1 game.
The Edmonton Oilers are making a change in goal after just a single game.
The Oilers opened up the season by taking a commanding 3-0 lead over their divisional and intraprovincial rivals the Calgary Flames in the season opener, a lead they would cough up to eventually lose the game by a score of 4-3 in the shootout.
The reality of the situation is the Flames should have never had a chance to come back in the game but were gifted an opportunity to do so by the often maligned Stuart Skinner. Skinner not only coughed up the 3 goal lead to the Flames but had a particularly egregious error on the game-tying goal that led to outrage on social media.
It seems that Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch didn't like what he saw out of Skinner either with Knoblauch making an immediate change in net for the team's second game of the season. The Oilers are set to welcome the Vancouver Canucks to town on Saturday night and Knoblauch will be going with a different goaltender despite Skinner having several days to rest between games.
In the starter's net on Saturday was none other than Oilers backup goaltender Calvin Pickard.
The Oilers also have the recently acquired Connor Ingram under contract now and one does have to wonder what a positive result for Pickard this evening could mean for Skinner moving forward.
In spite of the fact that he appeared in fewer games than Skinner last season, Pickard did finish with a better goals against average (2.71) and a better save percentage (.900) than Skinner did. By comparison Skinner recorded a 2.81 goals against average and a .896 save percentage although he did appear in 51 games compared to just 36 from Pickard.
Should Pickard continue to do so this season we could be looking at a very different scenario for Skinner moving forward with Ingraham now in the mix.
