News emerge on Wednesday night from reporter Benjamin Allbright, who usually works for the NFL, that court filing allege that Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz paid $75,000 to a then underage girl for sex. The billionaire is listed as a third party defendant, and not the main focus of the filing.
Allright provides images of the court filings and also shares text messages that were exchanges between Katz and the underage girl at the time of the incident. Katz would have been 53 at the time. The woman, who was underage at the time, is Sage Humphries, the lead plaintiff in the suit.
Later on Wednesday, CBC also reported that Katz paid a teenage ballet dancer $75,000 in exchange for "her sexual favours."
This is March 2016 self-portrait of ballerina Sage Humphries from her Instagram account. She was 17 at the time, and pitching Canadian billionaire Daryl Katz on a Hollywood movie, from CBC:
"If my guys send u funds will u spend it on/keep it for yourself?" Katz allegedly wrote. "And just between us? Even though u r wise beyond your years given our respective ages it would be taken the wrong way."
"Yes .. Just between us," Humphries purportedly replies.
"OK will have one of my guys email u. He will send you 50K," says the message attributed to Katz.
Allright also points out that this is not the first time Katz is caught in a sexual harassement and sex scandal allegations. Back in 2017, model, Greice Santo, Katz, a financier behind Silver Pictures of offering her “millions” of dollars and a movie role in exchange for sex.
From Variety at the time of the incident:
The model, Greice Santo, who had a recurring role in “Jane the Virgin,” alleges that she was twice lured to the hotel room of Daryl Katz, the Canadian billionaire who owns the Edmonton Oilers, with promises that he could help her acting career. Santo says that although she spurned Katz’s advances, she later received two wire transfers totaling $35,000. In an interview, she said that such behavior is typical in Hollywood.
The Oilers have yet to comment on the allegations as this just came out and started trending on social media. But the story is troubling and let’s hope the NHL looks into this.
A lawyer representing Katz denied the allegations.
