The Edmonton Oilers appear poised to fully move on from the goaltending tandem that they entered the 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season with.

Of course former Oilers number one goaltender Stuart Skinner was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this season, but now the Oilers appear set to unload the offer half of that tandem. According to an official announcement from the Oilers themselves, veteran backup goaltender Calvin Pickard was placed on waivers on Sunday.

The 33 year old veteran backup has had a tough season in Edmonton with a 3.68 goals against average and a .871 save percentage over 16 appearances this season. It has become crystal clear that the Oilers felt they simply could not achieve their goals with Skinner and Pickard between the pipes, and the only question now is whether or not Pickard will be sent down to the American Hockey League or if a rival team will claim him on Monday.

While Pickard isn't having the best of seasons he does bring with him a wealth of experience with 191 career NHL games under his belt. Pickard was of course a big part of the Oilers back to back runs to the Stanley Cup Final, a unique level of experience that would be hard to find elsewhere. Combined with the fact that Pickard is on a relatively affordable contract at an average annual value and cap hit of just $1 million per season, and I do think there is a chance the Oilers could lose him here.

We won't know till tomorrow however, so stay tuned for more on this developing story.
