When Ken Holland took over as the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, he selected Swedish defenseman Philip Broberg 8th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. Holland had faith but the road to the NHL has been tough on Broberg and he may have now become one of Holland’s casualties to the tight cap situation that the Oilers find themselves in.

According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, Holland has reportedly made Broberg available on the trade market if the right circumstances present themselves, beyond making room on the cap, in order to get a top-six winger and a top-4 defenseman.

The Oilers are well-known to trade away first-round players like Jesse Puljujarvi, Nail Yakupov and Taylor Hall. Broberg could now be added to that list.

There were even rumours of Edmonton considering trades involving Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, which would be yet another Oilers’ first-rounder that could get caught up in significant moves.

However for now, Pagnotta only points to Broberg who might be huge as a trade chip to get the Oilers the boost they need up front and a necessary stability on the back end.

Will Broberg still be on the team after the 2023 NHL Draft? This one will be interesting to follow.
