The Edmonton Oilers have completed an important piece of the Darnell Nurse trade.
It was pretty tidy business on the part of Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman to somehow get out from under Nurse's contract without any salary retention, and even more impressive was the fact that the Oilers received assets in return.
One of the assets the Oilers received came in the form of 24 year old former first round pick Shakir Mukhamadullin, and it seems the Oilers have liked what they've seen from the young blue liner. On Saturday, it was announced via Mukhamadullin's agent that the Oilers had come to terms on a 2 year extension following the trade from San Jose, an indication that they play to keep Mukhamadullin around for the foreseeable future.
Mukhamadullin was originally selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round (20th overall) of the 2020 National Hockey League Entry Draft, but really only got a chance to flourish in the NHL as a member of the San Jose Sharks. Last season he appeared in 50 games for the Sharks, scoring 5 goals and adding 7 assists for a total of 12 points on the season.
The Oilers also acquired 21 year old defenseman Zack Sharp as part of the trade that sent Nurse to San Jose, although Sharp currently remains unsigned.
