Olympic Village runs out of condoms just days into Games

Getting in some extra cardio in the Village…?

It appears some Olympic athletes are staying just as active off the ice and slopes as they are in competition.

According to Italian newspaper La Stampa, the athletes’ village in Cortina d’Ampezzo has reportedly run out of condoms, and it didn’t take long. While we’re only on Day 7 of the Winter Olympics, an anonymous athlete told the outlet supplies were depleted in just three days.

“The supplies sold out in just three days. They promised us more will arrive but who knows when,” the athlete reportedly said.

The report also pointed a finger at Olympic organizers, suggesting they weren’t “particularly generous with the numbers.” For comparison, during the Paris Summer Games, approximately 300,000 condoms were distributed, roughly two per athlete per day. At these Winter Games, however, the reported number was significantly lower: fewer than 10,000 in total.

The Cortina site houses competitors in bobsleigh, luge, skeleton, alpine skiing, and curling, while other villages operate in Milan, Livigno, Predazzo, Bormio, and Anterselva.

Free condom distribution has been an Olympic tradition since 1988, promoting safe practices during one of the world’s largest athletic gatherings.

This time, though, organizers may have underestimated demand, and the athletes clearly didn’t.
