This goes off the rails quickly!
One thing that we may never see in the NHL again is a true bench clearing brawl.
A staple of the 1960s and 1970s, the NHL cracked down on bench clearing brawls in the 1980s, issuing lengthy suspensions for players who leave the bench to join in altercations. Honestly, while I do miss a good brouhaha... the decision was made for the best. Some of those old brawls were absolutely brutal to watch and they slowed the game down to a snail's pace.
But... the boys from Alaska and Omaha are trying to bring it back in fashion.
Things got a bit frisky when the two NCAA teams faced off yesterday in Omaha and it all comes down to an over the top OT goal celebration from Alaska in front of the Omaha bench the night prior.
Here's a breakdown from Twitter user spomer_hky, who was at the game:
Woooooow...
I gotta say, if an NHL team like that celebrated in front of another team's bench like that it would get NASTY quickly. It's honestly surprising to me that it took an entire game and another goal celebration like this to spur any nonsense. I understand that these are kids and that showboating is more of a thing at the junior or NCAA level, but I've never seen anything like this in the WHL, OHL or QMJHL. Frankly... this is some bush league shit and both of these coaches should be reprimanded by the NCAA for allowing their team's celebration to spill into their opponent's bench.
Having said ALL of that... how much would you pay to watch a good old fashioned bench clearing brawl in the NHL nowadays? We get to see it every few years in the MLB, but let's be real... those guys couldn't throw a punch if their lives depended on it. I'd absolutely love to see the big boys hop over the boards and dance with a partner... just 100 gloves out there for the refs to sort out. Old school hockey.
