On this Day: Hawks ship Hasek to Sabres

August 7th, 1992: The Chicago Blackhawks trade Czech goaltender Dominik Hasek to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for goaltender Stephane Beauregard and a fourth round draft pick. Just a season later Hasek would blossom into one of the NHL’s top netminders and go on an impressive run that would earn him the nickname ‘The Dominator’.

Beginning in the 1993-94 season, Hasek would win the Vezina Trophy five times in six seasons, twice winning the Hart Trophy as league MVP along the way. And, while he got the Sabres to a Stanley Cup Final in 1999, he wasn’t able to win the trophy until eventually moving on to the Detroit Red Wings.

In Motown, Hasek would continue his stellar play from his days in Buffalo, eventually winning the Cup in 2002 and 2008. He would retire in the 2008 offseason with 389 career wins, 81 career shutouts and several league and team records. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and is widely considered to be one of the NHL’s all-time greatest goaltenders.
