NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said on Tuesday that he hasn’t determined if Corey Perry will need to have a conversation with him if he wishes to resume his NHL career at some point. However, one NHL coach had a conversation about Perry’s future in the league and that’s Vegas Golden Knights assistant coach Dominique Ducharme who was Perry’s bench boss with the Montreal Canadiens. On the air of TVA Sports, Ducharme told Jean-Charles Lajoie that he wants to see Perry return to the NHL (translated from French, by yours truly):

“I really hope he comes back. I hope he will sort out all the things he needs to sort out. Corey made a statement. He’s going to handle this, he’s a very proud guy, who’s proud of his career and of himself. I am sure that he is not happy with the situation and that he will take the necessary measures. I only have good words for him.”

For now, Perry is focused on his recovery and his family despite being an unreasonable free agent since the Blackhawks terminate his one-year, $4 million contract last week.

“I would like to sincerely apologize to the entire Chicago Blackhawks organization, including ownership, management, coaches, trainers, employees, and my teammates. I would also like to apologize to my fans, and my family. I am embarrassed and I have let you all down,” Perry wrote in his statement.

There is no doubt that Perry could eventually make a return to the NHL, however, there are a lot of things to iron out before he should consider coming back. He could even be a great addition to any team, and imagine if he joins the defending Stanley Cup champions in Vegas. Perry could finally get a shot at a second championship in his career and it would be quite a redemption story.

Perry had four goals and five assists in 16 games this season, his first in Chicago.
