One simple graphic explaining why your team is doing good (or sucks).

The graph talks by itself!

If you're a hockey fan, you've probably heard about ''Corsi'' already. If not, here's a simple explanation by Wikipedia

''Corsi is an advanced statistic used in the National Hockey League to measure shot attempt differential while at even strength play. This includes shots on goal, missed shots on goal, and blocked shot attempts towards the opposition's net minus the same shot attempts directed at your own team's net.''

So basically, does your team shoot more or less than its opponent on average? It doesn't take into account the quality of the shots taken, however.

Here's a graph telling it all, by @ChartingHockey. It computes the running differential (each Corsi of every game, added together).

Many people were surprised yesterday by our post giving teams' odds to reach the playoff and beyond. From the graph above, we gather these facts:

- Boston, L.A. and Washington shoot a LOT more than their opponents, which increases their chances of winning games.

- Arizona, Colorado, Detroit, Ottawa and Vancouver shoot a lot less than their opponents.

- On average, the running Corsi differential is a good indicator of the team offensive performance, or its defensive discipline.

We hate bugging people with stats, but this one was too good to pass.
