Everyone is awaiting the NHL’s decision on Evander Kane, whether he will be suspended or able to sign as a free agent with a new team. As you know, there is an ongoing investigation on the forward crossing border from US into Canada on Dec. 29. Kane tested positive for COVID on Dec. 21, and flew to Vancouver on the 29th. In termination notice from SJ, it was alleged he did not have proper medical clearance. This has prevented a signing for Kane.
The Edmonton Oilers were hoping to get an injection of offense and attitude in the form of Kane and according to reports we’ve been hearing since Kane had his contract terminated by the San Jose Sharks it sounded like that was in fact where he was going to be heading. But then on Saturday night Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Washington Capitals had jumped into the mix, giving the Oilers a run for their money when it comes to Kane.
However, on Wednesday, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that Kane had met with Oilers general manager Ken Holland and head coach Dave Tippett to discuss his fit on the team.
There was chatter when the rumour first surfaced that the Oilers were getting in the mix that even captain Connor McDavid had a chat with Kane.
Fans were somewhat stunned that McDavid would support a controversial player like Kane, but the captain also knows he needs to be surrounded way better to make it to the Stanley Cup.
After all, Kane put up 22 goals and 49 points in just 56 games last season. He has the potential to be a 35+ goal scorer and 70+ point player over a full season and that’s why teams have been interested in him, especially the Oilers.
Dreger does not mention if the meeting was satisfactory for Kane or the Oilers, though we bet they cannot wait to know what the NHL decides to make the ultimate move.
