There were rumors that Russian defenseman Dmitry Orlov would be headed to the Kontinental Hockey League after failing to reach a deal with the Washinton Capitals, but despite those rumors, or perhaps in part as a result of them, Orlov will not be leaving the National Hockey League.

The Washington Capitals made the announcement official with general manager Brian McLellan revealing that the Capitals had agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Orlov, the deal is worth $2.57 million.

Orlov is coming off a career year, and there was some belief that the KHL would provide him an option to play out his restricted free agency freeing up to eventually return to the NHL as an unrestricted free agent.

Orlov's agent also represents Valeri Nichushkin, a player who did follow through and signed with the KHL earlier this week.
