This just in, the NHL has returned a 1st round draft choice to the Ottawa Senators after first taking it away for violating the league's trade policies.

While the league initially took a 1st round pick away from the Senators, the pick has now been returned to the team but with some conditions. The pick will be the final pick of the draft (32nd overall) and cannot be traded.

From the NHL:

The Senators’ penalty will now involve the forfeiture of their first round pick in 2026 in favor of the right instead to pick 32nd overall in the 2026 NHL Draft (the last pick in the first round). The Club will not be permitted to trade or transfer its right to the 32nd overall selection in the 2026 Draft. In addition, the Club will pay a fine of $1 Million (CDN).

The Senators were originally penalized for trading forward Evgeni Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights without disclosing the details of his no-trade clause/list to the Knights. When the Golden Knights tried to flip Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks, the trade was denied by the NHL as Dadonov had the Ducks on his no-trade list, which Vegas was unaware of because the Senators did not file Dadonov's no-trade list with Vegas originally.

The NHL punished the Senators for negligence, revoking a 1st round selection from any one of 2024, 2025 or 2026. The team's new management team under new owner Michael Andlauer have been appealing to the league for awhile now and today they have received their 1st round pick back.
