Things got very ugly on Sunday night in the National Hockey League when all hell broke loose during a clash between the Buffalo Sabres and the Tampa Bay Lightning, two of the Atlantic Division's top teams this season.

It was an incredible game that was highlighted by a ton of goals and even more physicality between the two teams on the ice, but there is one incident in particular that has caused a considerable amount of backlash to be directed towards the NHL and its on-ice officials.

The incident in question occurred during the game's second period and saw Lightning forward Brandon Hagel engage in what I can only describe as a vicious attack directed against Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin. Hagel would throw several unanswered punches at the head of his opponent, but somehow avoided being ejected from the game.

Following the game itself Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News openly called out the NHL officials on the ice by name for failing to protect Dahlin.

"It's really beyond belief Brandon Hagel is still in this game for his attack on Dahlin," wrote Harrington on Sunday night. "That was basically assault. Terrible officiating there from Eric Furlatt and Brian Pochmara."

While you can make the argument that Harrington, who covers the Sabres, may be biased here he certainly wasn't alone in his assessment. Pittsburgh Penguins reporter Josh Yohe called on the NHL to suspend Hagel, for multiple games no less, over the incident.

"Should be a multiple game suspension. How did he not get ejected?" asked Yohe on Monday.

Should Hagel face a suspension from the NHL and if so how many games does he deserve? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
