Outraged Flyers fans launch hilarious campaign for a new owner.
They have seen enough.
Every year in free agency there are teams that emerge as winners and by extension teams that are perceived as losers when it comes to acquiring or retaining big ticket free agents. It usually takes a long time to determine these winners and losers given the fact that players can take a long time to make their decisions, but in spite of that fact there are several fans in Philadelphia who have already decided that their team will be in the loser category this time around.
A fan who identifies himself only as "Nathaniel B" has decided to start a GoFundMe in the hopes of raising enough money to purchase a billboard along I-95 to "get the word out that Flyers fans demand substantial change at the ownership level of the Philadelphia Flyers."
Here is the longer version of Nathaniel's message, unedited and in full as per his GoFundMe page:
As fans of the franchise are painfully aware, The Flyers have been on the decline since their last Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2010. Evidence of yearly fan frustration can be found in forums, message boards, social media feeds, and local sports media.
The most recent season and following offseason have been the final straw for many fans who, for one reason or another, can no longer tolerate rooting for the team they have long held so dear.
Our goal then is simple: We wish to place a billboard (maybe two) voicing our collective displeasure with the ownership of the team and the direction the franchise is heading. To be ABSOLUTELY clear, We don’t feel there is any singular person to blame; this goes far beyond players, coaches, and front office individuals.
Our initial fundraising goal is $5,000 to place a billboard closest the arena along Broad Street. This fundraising effort is not intended to make a profit. The plan for any remaining / additional funds is to donate to a local cancer-related charity in recognition of Oskar Lindblom. If there is support to extend the term of the billboard, we will consider that at the appropriate time.
If we fail to reach our goal, we will use what we did collect and purchase a billboard for the amount of time and location that can be monetarily acquired.
Thank you for your interest and potential support! Let's Go Flyers!
Now this may seem like a silly idea but Nathaniel is very serious and has asked for $5,000 in an effort to purchase the billboards as he describes them. As it turns out he's far from alone because at the time of this writing he has already received 88 donations totalling over $1,400, putting him well on the path towards his goal.
I suspect that this may have a good bit to do with the recent reports that suggested the Flyers were never in the hunt for top free agent winger Johnny Gaudreau, in spite of the fact that there was a clear desire on the part of the player to join the Flyers. Flyers fans have not been shy about expressing their displeasure over the decisions made by their team thus far this summer, and this may just be one of the consequences of those decisions.
