Ovechkin reveals unbelievable detail about his 750th career goal.
Incredible!
There's no question that Alexander Ovechkin is one of the greatest players to ever play the sport of hockey, and quite frankly it is going to be a pleasure to watch his continued assault on the National Hockey League record books for as long as he can keep going.
On Saturday night the Washington Capitals captain claimed another part of NHL history when he recorded the 750th goal of his career, going from 700 to 750 goals faster than any other player has in the history of the league. Only 3 other players have done it, Jaromir Jagr needed 184 NHL games for him to go from his 700th goal to his 750th goal, Wayne Gretzky had previously been the 2nd fastest to do it achieving it in only 118 games and Gordie Howe was the previous record holder after managing to go from 700 to 750 in just 108 games.
Ovechkin managed to do it in just 79 games.
There's little doubt in my mind that this was the highlight of the night for Ovechkin and I suspect he will cherish the fact that he managed it faster than the 3 aforementioned NHL legends, but there was also another reason this goal was special for The Great 8. Following the game Ovechkin revealed that the man he actually scored the goal on had made it an extra special moment for him, surprising given that the goal was scored on Columbus Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Daniil Tarasov.
The reason it was special? Well according to Ovechkin, earlier on in his career during his time in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League he faced off against another goaltender with the same last name. In that instance the goaltender was Vadim Tarasov, a now retired KHL goaltender who is 44 years old, and Vadim actually happens to be the father of Daniil.
That's right. Ovechkin has been scoring goals for so long that he has now beaten two generations of a family of goaltenders and he did so with at least 16 years apart between the two goals.
"I think I played against his father back in Russia," said Ovechkin.
It turns out Ovechkin was absolutely right.
