Ovechkin scores twice in under a minute.

A living legend.

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is currently on a trajectory that will see him surpassing a number of legendary National Hockey League players in the league's record books over the coming years. If he continues to have games like the one he is having tonight however, we may not have to wait as long as we think.

Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals entered the 2nd period of their game against the Florida Panthers down a goal, but the game would take a drastic turn in the opening moments of the middle frame. It was Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson who opened up the scoring, picking up Washington's first of the game and tying things up while shorthanded on the ice.

Although it would be Wilson that would open up the scoring, it would be the captain that would blow the game wide open for the Capitals. Ovechkin scored the Capitals second goal of the game just 1:16 after Wilson had found the back of the net.

That proved to be 2 goals in rapid succession for the Capitals but Ovechkin's 2nd of the game would come even faster. Just 56 seconds after beating Sergei Bobrovsky and chasing him from the game, Ovechkin would do it again. After a turnover by the Panthers in the neutral zone, Ovechkin would find himself with a clear shooting lane and fired off a rocket from the top of the faceoff circle to give his Capitals a sudden and stunning 2 goal lead just minutes into the 2nd period.

Those 2 points have now propelled Ovechkin to number 27 on the NHL's all time points leader list, and there's a very good chance he will move up several more spots this season given his impressive pace thus far. Next up for Ovechkin is current Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan, who has 1354 career points in the NHL.

Johnny Bucyk has 1369, Mike Modano 1374, Brett Hull 1391, and Luc Robitaille has 1394. Ovechkin has set a 33 point pace through his first 20 games of the season, and I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that he could pass all of them this season.
