P.K. Subban ejected after fighting Oliver Wahlstrom.

Subban tossed from the game.

New Jersey Devils star defenseman P.K. Subban had an easy day's work today in the National Hockey League after he quickly found himself on the wrong side of an NHL official.

Subban and the Devils took on the New York Islanders on Sunday but Subban didn't even make it halfway through the contest. That's because during the second period there was an incident involving Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom and Devils former first overall pick Jack Hughes, and Subban would find himself ejected from the game following that incident.

It was Wahlstrom who got things started when he delivered a big hit to Hughes along the boards, one where the primary point of impact appeared to be the thigh and/or knee area of both players' legs. As a result of that collision Hughes would go down and limp back towards the Devils bench, and seeing the young star injured appeared to set Subban off. The veteran defenseman immediately went after Wahlstrom, challenging him to a fight and quickly dropping the gloves before the two men engaged.

Although I think it's fair to point out that Wahlstrom never really got a chance to start the fight, Subban would make quick work of the Islanders forward. All it took was one stiff uppercut from Subban to send Wahlstrom crashing down to the ice, putting an end to the fight before it had even really begun. It was at that point that the officials on the ice had seen enough, and perhaps in an effort to cool things down between the two hostile teams they made the decision to toss Subban from the game.

It is unclear on what grounds Subban was tossed from the game, but it appears he was simply awarded a game misconduct by the officials on the ice. What is certain is that this left the Devils down a forward due to the Hughes injury, he would not return, and a defenseman as well due to Subban's zealous defense of his young star. The Devils would fall short in the end losing by a score of 4 - 3.
