P.K. Subban speaks out after black teen suffers racial abuse at PEI hockey tournament

Absolutely despicable. This kind of stuff has no place in our game.

Earlier today the CBC reported on a story out of Prince Edward Island (PEI) where 16 year old Mark Connors of Halifax, NS was subjected to disgusting acts of racism while competing in a local under-18 AA hockey tournament.

"Some of the younger kids in the stands were calling me a racial slur, one guy said Halifax has a n----- for a goalie," Connors told the CBC. "In the third period they kept on talking, saying n-----, n-----, n-----."

Connors also says that people told him, "'You shouldn't be playing hockey, this is a white man's sport,'" while he was minding his own business in the hotel where the visiting teams were all staying.

Hockey PEI has launched an investigation into Connors' claims but has said that it may "take some time due to the complex nature." Umm... okay? What's complex about this? Find out who said this racist, heinous BS and hold them accountable. That's it.

In the meantime, NHL star P.K. Subban, who has endured racial abuse throughout his entire hockey career, heard Connors' story and felt compelled to offer his support for the young goaltender.

From Subban:

- P.K. Subban

Maybe it's because I grew up in a different era and played with mostly other light-skinned people of European descent, but I can't imagine this happening in minor hockey when I played. But the amount of stories I read each year about BS like this happening makes my stomach turn. I hope that the kids responsible for this are held accountable both by their coaches and by their parents. That's no way to behave both on and off the ice and these kids need to learn a valuable life lesson nice and early before they go down a wrong path. When they see that this kind of behaviour is acceptable then there's no telling what they'll say or do next. Find out who said these words and make them feel every ounce of shame that they should so that they learn their lesson.
