No doubt about it, the Panthers aren't sitting around this offseason.
This just in, the Florida Panthers have acquired forward Garnet Hathaway from the Philadelphia Flyers in a swap of draft picks.
Hathaway has carved out a respected NHL career by doing the kind of work that teams need but that rarely shows up on highlight reels. Hathaway brings over a decade of NHL experience to the Panthers, a relentless physical style, and the type of veteran leadership that has become synonymous with successful playoff hockey. Throughout his career with the Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and Flyers, Hathaway has built a reputation as one of the league's premier energy forwards, combining hard forechecking, physical play, penalty killing, and a willingness to make life miserable for opposing defensemen. He has consistently been among the NHL's leaders in hits and has proven capable of chipping in timely offense despite spending most of his career in a bottom-six role.
Hathaway's value goes far beyond the scoresheet. During his time in Philadelphia, he became one of the Flyers' emotional leaders and a favorite of coaches thanks to his professionalism and consistency. In 2023-24, he led the Flyers in hits and established himself as one of the NHL's most effective fourth-line forwards, helping set the tone every night with his physicality and work ethic. Flyers management frequently praised his leadership qualities and the standard he brought to the dressing room.
For the Panthers, the acquisition feels like a classic Florida move. The organization has built its recent success around a heavy, aggressive style that wears opponents down over the course of a playoff series. Hathaway fits that identity perfectly. He arrives with extensive postseason experience and the ability to play in difficult, high-pressure situations. His game should translate seamlessly into Florida's system, where physicality, forechecking pressure, and defensive responsibility are highly valued.
Perhaps most importantly, Hathaway appears poised to replace much of what A.J. Greer provided in Florida's lineup. Greer emerged as an important depth piece for the Panthers thanks to his size, toughness, and willingness to play a hard-nosed game, but Hathaway offers a very similar package with even more NHL experience. While the two players are not identical, Hathaway can step directly into a fourth-line role, provide a physical presence on the forecheck, kill penalties, and bring the kind of edge that has become a hallmark of Panthers hockey. In many ways, Florida is exchanging one rugged bottom-six forward for another, but Hathaway's veteran resume and leadership qualities could make him an especially valuable addition as the Panthers continue their pursuit of another Stanley Cup.
