Tkachuk pushes Wotherspoon too far and gets sucker punched from behind.
Florida Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk has built quite the reputation for his ability to get under the skin of his opponents, but sometimes Tkachuk can be a little too good at his job.
On Sunday, Tkachuk and the Panthers faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins and fans who tuned in to that game were treated to a game-long battle between Tkachuk and Penguins defenseman Parker Wotherspoon. The two men went back and forth throughout the game with Tkachuk using his usual tactics to get under an opponent's skin, only this time it would prove costly for Tkachuk.
A little less than midway through the game's third period, Tkachuk would catch Wotherspoon with a slash that appeared to cause the Penguins blue liner to snap. As Tkachuk skated past him following the blow, Wotherspoon simply uncorked a stiff punch to Tkachuk's face from behind, all while holding his stick in his glove no less.
Tkachuk appeared to be stung by the blow which caused his teammates to rush in, with Panthers forward Sam Bennett giving Wotherspoon a taste of his own medicine and then some. Bennett would land a stiff cross-check to Wotherspoon before hitting him with a series of stiff punches as well.
While Tkachuk clearly put Wotherspoon off his game, it would be the Panthers who would end up short handed after this exchange.
Here's a look at the sequence:
